Guest Post: Vacationing without the Children

When you decide to travel with children, you have to spend considerable time and planning to ensure that they are properly cared for on the trip. It may seem that taking a trip alone with your spouse will free you up for a short time from those responsibilities; but it won’t. You’re going to be required to spend an equivalent amount of time and planning to ensure that the children are properly cared for by someone else while you’re gone. In addition, you’re going to have to prepare them for the period of separation.

Prepare the Caregiver

When leaving the children with a caregiver, it’s best if the caregiver is someone with whom they have a relationship, a grandparent, an aunt, or a close friend. It is also most beneficial if the children are taken care of in their own home. If that is not possible, the next best option is to have the caregiver care for them in the caregiver’s home with which the children are familiar.

If, however, the caregiver is a stranger, it is important that the caregiver spend one or more days with the children allowing them to become familiar and comfortable with this new person. It will also give the caregiver time to understand the daily routine of the children. It will also provide you with time to explain house rules and provide the caregiver with all of the information he or she will need regarding medicines, schedules, bedtimes, etc.

It’s an excellent idea to provide a written list of what you expect. The list should include any special fire escape procedures that the children have been taught, where to find important numbers for doctors, a number at which you can always be reached, and any allergies that the children may have. You can review this list with the caregiver to reinforce its importance.

Prepare the Kids for a Separation

There is no question that children do experience a certain amount of separation anxiety when their parents go away, even for a short time. The degree of anxiety usually depends upon the age of the children. Younger children, age two and under, are usually most affected. They may even feel that they are responsible for your leaving, as though they had misbehaved. It’s important to assure them that that is not the case.

Pre-teens may try to hide their anxiety behind a mask of anger or sadness. If you plan activities for them and make sure that they understand that you need to spend time alone with your spouse and that you love them very much, they should come around.

Older children, teenagers, may find the separation to be an adventure. You may find that their noses are bent a little out of shape to find that they can’t stay home alone and care for themselves. It’s important that they understand that as a responsible parent, you’ve provided a caregiver to ensure that everyone is safe in case anything should go wrong.

Provide Needed Things

Make sure that, in addition to food, including special foods for certain children, you have filled the medicine cabinet with everything the caregiver might need in case of a minor injury or illness, items like pain relievers, bandages, cotton balls, sunscreen, bug sprays, tweezers, lotions, thermometers, etc. And the most important thing is teaching your caregiver to use your safest Britax convertible car seat once they needed bring them out.

Communicate with the Children Regularly During Your Absence

While you’re away, communicate with the caregiver at a prearranged time each day. You may ask the caregiver to give you a call at certain times to your cell phone.

Before you leave, let the children know where you are going, and what you expect to be doing. Let them know that you will be bringing them back a souvenir of some type. Show them on the calendar just when you’ll be coming back so they can track your progress.

Send each of the children an interesting postcard each day of your trip if possible. They will look forward to the contact, and be comforted by the fact that you’re thinking of them every day. Let them know that you love them and are proud of them and appreciate their help in making your vacation a happy one.
